This research examines sustainable packaging adoption in the Gulf region, focusing on Bahrain and the UAE. This research investigates the factors influencing the adoption of sustainable packaging, analyzing consumer demands, regulatory frameworks, and economic considerations. Despite existing and emerging policies, both nations trail other developing and developed in the east and west in comprehensive sustainable packaging regulations. A survey of 40 consumers reveals a strong desire for sustainable alternate options, linking them to brand ethics and quality. However, cost and limited availability are major barriers, with most unwilling to pay a significant premium due to the regional market’s price sensitivity. The study highlights the critical need for increased consumer awareness and, crucially, stronger government intervention to drive wide-spread adoption and infrastructure development within the region. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
