Dr. Mar de Fez Laso
Program Lead (Professor of Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy)

Dr Mar de Fez Laso is a Professor of Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy. Since she joined AUBH in September 2020 she has led the Division of Arts and Sciences. Analytical, visionary professional with 30+ years of high-impact experience across higher education, financial sectors, research and fellowship environments, she priorly held the positions of Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy; Director of Scientific Outreach; Chair of the Division of Science, Technology and Mathematics; Dean of Graduate Studies and Research; and Vice President (Dresdner Bank).

Dr de Fez Laso graduated in 1989 with Honours in Fundamental Physics from Valencia University, Spain. From this University she also earned her PhD within the field of Nuclear and Particle Physics in 1994. The title of her PhD Thesis was: "The Topological Branching Ratios of the Tau lepton at the Z-zero Energy" and the title of her Examen de Grado Thesis (1990) was: "The Calibration of the Time of Flight Detector of the DELPHI experiment", research projects carried out while on permanent stage at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). At this early age she was already part of the collective that asked Sir Tim Berners Lee to develop a tool permitting scientists from all over the world to effectively access and share information. In 1989, while she was at CERN as a graduate student, she applauded the first ever talk on html, http, URLs, Browser, and HTML editor. Dr de Fez Laso, together with scientists from all over the world, contributed through her daily work at CERN to the development and establishment of the World Wide Web, without which we cannot imagine our world today.

A collaborative leader skilled in learning management systems and methodologies, Dr de Fez Laso supports a “learning by doing” philosophy across classroom, field, laboratory, and online environments. She is a passionate, engaging speaker with extensive experience presenting to both large and small groups and loves sharing her knowledge on both face to face and distance learning interactions, the latter since 2011. Her yearning is shared with students and peers, and she dedicates herself fully to ensure the highest standard of education, and the instilment of a life of long learning.

Dr de Fez Laso has a proven record of architecting and accelerating growth of academic teams, academic curricula, and innovative learning programmes, including conflict zones (Afghanistan). Her course “Explore the Universe” (also known as “Current Developments in Astronomy”) is a journey through the magic earth sciences, astrophysics, and particle physics that entices students to travel to a space where better lives and better worlds are possible.

Strong business acumen with highly successful financial and technical experience, she worked in Investment Banking in the City of London (UK) for BNP Paribas, Dresdner Bank, and Banco Santander, and before that she held the position of Research Scientist at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (London, United Kingdom). She is an articulate communicator focused on building and strengthening relationships across educational groups, peers, international partners, ministerial bodies, and top management executives, what makes possible for her to achieve execution of projects.

During her academic career she has been the sole or key author of nine internationally recognised papers as well as a joint author of a further eighty-five. She has received fifteen grants from both National and International Institutions. She is also the recipient of the Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado Award (1995), Scientific Ambassador for Spain - European Commission Award (1996) and received a Mention at the Online Euromoney Awards (2000) for her work on online foreign exchange trading facilities at Dresdner Bank. At BNP Paribas she created and directed the implementation of the marketing strategy of the Dow Jones Hedge Fund Balanced Portfolio Indexes. Her latest accolade is the 1st place on the Creative Teaching Competition of the International Innovative Teaching and Learning Conference (2021), with the paper “Conceptual changes to mathematics teaching to improve student learning & reduce academic integrity violations”.

Particular achievements include: leading and implementing the General Physics Laboratories for the New York Institute of Technology Bahrain campus; facilitating the acceptance of the first Bahraini student in the summer internship program of CERN; the selection of candidates from Bahraini high schools to attend the 2015 SESAME workshop, an event putting together participants from 9 Middle Eastern countries; being the organizational lead for the first CERN exhibition in the GCC, Shaikh Ebrahim Center for Culture and Research (2020, Bahrain); creating the booklet “The Women Have Got the Formula” in its English/Dari/Pashto version, a publication result of an international collaboration with the Ciudad de Las Artes y Las Ciencias (Spain) that aims to bring science closer to the people of Afghanistan; and creating a normal environment for students and faculty living and working in a war zone area – regular faculty mentoring and training of the highest standard was only matched by innovative curriculum development and five events promoting technology, mathematics, and the sciences. At AUBH Dr de Fez Laso oversees the largest academic division, encompassing a set of varied faculty and areas of knowledge and serving the largest student headcount with the promise of fulfilling the American Style of Education through the General Education component. She is the proud leader of a team of colleagues playing a key role on winning Accreditation and other Listings for AUBH.
