School counsellors are an important element of the US education system and collaborate with families to provide better services to their students. School counsellors are in a unique position of power and have an influence on Family Language Policy (FLP). The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative research study was to explore school counsellors’ perceptions of multilingualism, their impact on linguistically diverse families’ language policies, and the perceived impact of FLP on student outcomes. Data analysis yielded three themes: (1) Parents should speak to their children in their native language, (2) Bilingualism is an asset, and (3) FLP has a limited impact on students’ academic outcomes. Discussion and recommendations are provided. © 2026 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
