The American University of Bahrain (AUBH), in collaboration with “Search” -Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research, recently hosted an event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). 

‏Hosted at the Shaikh Ebrahim Center in Muharraq, the event brought together distinguished guests and media, reflecting AUBH’s commitment to advancing education and research while positioning Bahrain as a regional hub for science and innovation.

‏The highlight of the event was a keynote address by Professor John Ellis, CBE FRS, Clerk Maxwell Professor of Theoretical Physics at King’s College London and one of the leading figures in elementary particle physics at CERN. 

‏A panel discussion included CERN partners in Bahrain, focused on the role of science and innovation in economic growth. Local and international experts from, AUBH, “Search” Center, University of Bahrain and Tamkeen deliberated on how Bahrain could benefit from CERN’s research to support its development goals. The session underscored the importance of science and technology in strengthening the national economy and explored future joint projects.

‏Her Excellency Shaikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research, said: “We take great pride in this initiative with AUBH, which highlights the transformative power of science in fostering cultural dialogue and building connections between communities. CERN stands as a global exemplar of scientific and cultural collaboration, and it is a privilege to showcase its extraordinary contributions to humanity.”

‏Dr. Cook also praised the collaboration with Shaikh Ebrahim Center, acknowledging its significant cultural and scientific contributions to Bahrain, and added, “This event showcases the synergy between academic and cultural institutions in driving meaningful and lasting contributions to society. Through such initiatives, we aim to inspire students and the wider community to harness the potential of scientific research in tackling critical global issues and developing creative solutions for a brighter future.”

‏Notably, AUBH recently secured associate membership in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment of CERN. This collaboration places the university among a network of 247 scientific institutions from 57 countries, offering unparalleled opportunities for knowledge exchange and practical experience. A testament to the success of this partnership is the selection of two AUBH students for a 12-month internship at CERN, providing them with invaluable exposure to the forefront of scientific innovation.
